      Sioux Falls - Walter P. Mastel, age 81 of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House. Tuesday, March 25, 2008 the family will greet friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Miller´s, 13th & Main Ave., with a scripture service at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:30 am Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Avera Dougherty Hospice House or Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
      Walter P. Mastel, son of William and Catheryn (Wentz) Mastel, was born February 6, 1927 in Ipswich, SD. He grew up there graduating from high school in 1945. He then served in the Army during WWII.
      He was united in marriage to Virginia Lehr on November 11, 1948 in Ipswich. The couple lived in Rapid City, SD from 1951-1960 and then made their home in Sioux Falls. Walter worked for the U.S. Department of Labor for over 31 years. He retired in 1987 as State Director of the Department of Labor. Virginia preceded him in death July 12, 2001. Walter continued living in Sioux Falls where he later married Betty Leedom on September 3, 2005 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
      He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, retired Federal Employees, AARP and the American Legion, Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 300 and the U.A. for over 57 years.
      Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Betty; two sons, Gregory (Sally) Mastel, Sioux Falls, Thomas (Mary) Mastel, Minnetonka, MN; three grandchildren, Kirshna (Christopher) Meyer and their child Eli, Stephanie Mastel and her children, Adrianna and Thomas, Christine (Dennis) Busach and their child Savanna; his siblings, Rose Jasper, New Prauge, MN, Amy Sporeor, Ipswich, SD, Lawrence Mastel, Huron, SD, Florence Dodd, Alta, IA, Francis Geiei, Long View, WA, and Dorothy Portz, Casper, WY.
      His parents; brothers, Joe, Leonard and George; a sister, Kathryn; and a grandson, Christopher, also preceded him in death.
