Katherine Klein, born Ekatarina Folmer, was born about 1898 in Freidorf (this is the German name; the modern, Ukrainian name is Fjodorowka), Odessa, Russia. She was the adopted daughter of Fred and Julia Klein.
Katherine's adoptive mother, Julia (born Julianna Stolz) was born in Neu Freudental, Beresan, South Russia, 14 Jun 1875, to Georg Jakob Stolz and Christine Geier. The Stolz family originated from Germany but had been in Russia for generations as the Russian government encouraged Europeans to settle and farm in Russia.
Katherine's adoptive father, Friedrich ("Fred") Klein was born in Berlin, Tiraspol, South Russia, on June 13, 1876. He was the son of Johann Klein (born in Grossliebental, Odessa, South Russia 3 Oct 1836) and Katharina Strecker, who married in Grossliebental, Odessa, South Russia, 20 Nov 1858.
Julia and Fred were married on December 4, 1907, in Neu Freudental, Beresan, South Russia, by Pastor Martin Issler. Only one of their biological children, Amelia, was born in Russia; the other three were born in the United States.
Fred, Julia, Ekatarina and Amelia emigrated to the United States on the SS Montrose, leaving Antwerp, Belgium on November 17, 1909 and arriving in St. John, Canada on November 28, 1909. Ekatarina's birth name, Folmer, is on the ship's list. Their last residence in Russia was in Freidorf, Odessa, and their faith would probably have been Evangelical.
Katherine's arrival on November 29, 1909 from Belgium to St. John is recorded in "United States Border Crossings from Canada to United States, 1895-1956."
The family's stated destination was Washburn, North Dakota. After landing at St. John, they took a train to cross into the United States at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Fred and Julia were farmers and initially settled in Estherville, North Dakota (1910 census), and later in Koenig, North Dakota (1915 North Dakota census and the 1920 and 1930 US censuses).
We do not have any pictures of Katherine; the posted pictures are of her adoptive family. We also do not yet know what became of Katherine. She appears on the 1910 US census with Fred, Julia and Amelia, but not on the 1920 census. I have not yet been able to find Katherine's grave or to determine whether she died or left home before 1920.
