Dead Eugene G. Mettler, 36, of Woodbridge, a volunteer fireman who was riding on the fire engine as it answered a call to extinguish a grass fire at Lind's Airport. (A crash which totally demolished a Woodbridge fire truck and a peach truck involved in a collision at Cooper's Corner on Highway 99).
Mettler, who died in the accident, was a native of Menno, S.D. He had resided here since 1925 and was a member of the Zion Reformed Church and the volunteer fire department, which he was serving at the time of his death.
He leaves his wife, Johanna Mettler, and two children, Lemon Mettler, and Charlene Mettler, all of Lodi.
He also is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mettler and the following brothers and sisters: Emil Mettler, E.J. Mettler, Richard Mettler, Christ Mettler, and Mrs. Emma Frey, all residents of Lodi.

Leeman "Lee" Mettler, 65, of Woodbridge, died Sept. 25 in a local hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 6, 1936, in Lodi.
Mr. Mettler attended local schools and was a 1955 graduate of Lodi High School, where he played football. He later studied at University of California, Davis and also played football.
He married Nancy Foster on June 6, 1970 in Carmel. He was the owner/operator of the Delta Packing Company for 30 years. He was a member of Zion Reformed Church, Lodi Rotary Club, Woodbridge Gold and Country Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, 20-30 CLub of Stockton and the Lodi-Woodbridge Grape Growers Association. He traveled to the Philippines and exchanged ideas in the field of agriculture. He was inducted into the Lodi Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy Mettler of Woodbridge; a son; and sister, Charlene Horn.
