1927, Oct 24, The Atlanta Constitution Newspaper printed the following Obit of Payton; Mr. M. W. Payton died Sunday morning at a private sanitarium in his 60th year. He is survived by his widow; tow sons, Messrs. W. B. and L. C. Payton; daughter, Miss Eunice Payton; two brothers, Messrs. L. C. and Melvin Payton, and two sisters, Miss Evaline Payton and Mrs. J. T. Talton. Funderal services will be conducted this (Monday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at Rehoboth church. Rev. J. B. Spivey will officiate. Interment in churchyard. A. S. Turner, funeral director.

Military Service: Leonard Cedric Payton entered the Marine Corps during the depression of May 1928. He went through all the enlisted ranks, and then he was promoted to Marine Gunner (Warrant Officer) based on his professionalism in combat during the WW II. He was in the following battles during World War II: He was aboard the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier CV-2 at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later was forced to abandon ship (USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier) when it was sunk during the battle of the Coral Sea on 8 May 1942 and then he was picked up with another marine on his back (he couldn’t swim) after three days in the Pacific Ocean by the USS Dewey on 11 May 1942. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded during this battle for receiving shrapnel from three exploding bombs. He was also in the battle of Bougainville and Salamaua.

LeRoy Payton peacefully passed away at 12:06 A.M. on 20 February 2017, at the age of 81, after a long stay in intensive care at the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, NV with a heart valve problem. His Mother, Father, his son Lenny and his brother Gary preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Billy and former wife Sandy, two brothers, Larry and Donald, and a sister, Pauline.
