Michael, THANK YOU! Peter Wiest was my grandfather's uncle. (My grandfather was known to me as Paul Ernest, not Peter, so I'll use that name now for distinction between the two Peters). Peter Wiest and Paul's mother were sister and brother. Paul was born when his mother was either 13 or 15. Maybe this information will help fill in the blanks for which sister it was. Paul was supposedly born 10-14-1878. About the age of five, Paul's mother was going to be married to a man with the last name Hoagler, or Hogglund, or something similar. The new husband did not want to keep the five-year-old, so Peter adopted Paul before bringing him to the United States.
I also have information on the children of the marriage between Peter/Paul and Mary in 1899. They had two daughters Clara Marguerite and Edith Magdalene. There was a son born to the union, but Peter/Paul did not know his wife was pregnant when he left her. The boy, named Harry Garfield Wiest, was adopted out to a family in the Dakotas by the last name of Dietrich. Neither Clara nor Edith had any children. I'll send you information that I have regarding both of them. I knew Clara well as she lived here in Oregon. She died in 1977. Edith died in 1996 in California. Again, thanks for verything. I'm off to read your second message now and will write again soon. Take care. Joyce

Michael, I don't think it is the right guy. Peter/Paul married Maud Ethel West on July 26, 1906. At the very latest, his first wife could have gotten pregnant one day before the marriage. I'm sure that's not the case, but a child born in November 1908 would definitely be too late. He was adopted out through the North Dakota Children's Home Society in Fargo, ND. The Superintendent, Frank D. Hall, was very ill when Harry's mother tried to find out information on him in 1926. I believe she waited until he was 21 to get the information. (Peter/Paul's first child Clara was born July 15, 1901; second child Edith was born February 3, 1904; so Harry could easily have been born in 1905). One of the letters I have is post marked August23, 1926.
The home may also have been called "Pioneers Memorial Childrens Home" because that is a picture on the outside of the envelope.
Peter/Paul's first wife was Maria Magdalena Berger born July 31, 1882 in Molin, Ohio. Her parents are Jacob Berger and Maria Katharina Wegner. (I have Maria Berger's birth certificate framed on my mantle). Maria Katharina Wegner was born to Otto Wegner (b. July 1857- Germany) and Katherine (b. 1847-Germany) Berger. They are listed in the 1900 census and have Jacob's mother living with them. At this moment, I can't lay my hands on where they are in the census but believe it is in South Dakota.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all you're doing to help me find my family. Take care. Joyce
Fargo - A total of 180 children were cared for at the North Dakota Children's Home, according to the annual report of Superintendent Frank Drew Hall.
Frank Drew Hall was appointed by the Publication Society as Sunday achool missionary for North and South Dakota. He held this position until appointed Superintendent of the South Dakota Children's Home Society in Fargo in May 1902. Here, with Mrs. Hall as matron, he received and provided for two thousand five hundred sixty-two homeless and abandoned children. Mr. Hall looks upon this record as his main life work. While doing Sunday School work he established many Sunday schools in North Dakota. He attended nearly every State Covention during his residence in North Dakota and served as secretary at many of these conventions.
The great humanitarian work of my father continued in the field of help to homeless children until 1926, when in the spring of the year he was stricken with apoplexy which completely paralyzed his side and made him an invalid for the remaining eleven years of his life.
