Marlyn Mackey, 76, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, November 12, 2012, at her home in Columbus.
The funeral service will be at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. Private family interment will be in the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance, Nebraska.
Marlyn Mackey was born June 20, 1936, in Sutton, Nebraska, to Alvin and Hermina "Minnie" (Griess) Zimbelman. The depression forced them to leave the farm and move to Lexington. At that time she had 4 older sisters, Dorothy, Virginia, Nadine, and Norma, and one brother Larry. They worked on George and Mary Maloley's farm as truck farmers. She had two younger brothers, Allen and Denny. After a couple of years of living in Lexington they then moved to Cozad. Growing up thru hard times kept her very close to her brothers and sisters. At family reunions they all would share some fun stories. Such as how the girls would steal bobby pins from one another when they were sleeping. They had only a few and the last one to bed would usually have the nicest curls!
Marlyn married Richard Slack in 1952 and they had two daughters, Deborah and Jamie. They were later divorced. While she was single raising two daughters she worked at a bakery for a few years and then at grocery store in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The Slack in-laws were her second family.
She married Don Andresen in 1966 and was blessed with a son, Bruce in 1967 at Lexington. During the years in Lexington, she was a stay at home mom. She was a great cook which was something she got from her mother. Grew vegetables and did lots of canning. She also did a lot of sewing, providing special dresses for her daughters!
In 1970 the family moved to McCook. Don passed away in 1987.
She worked for a time in school cafeteria systems and then managed the student union at McCook Jr. College. It was what brought her and Fred Mackey together.
In May 1989 she met Fred on a trip to England. They both traveled with the band from McCook Junior College as chaperones. They were married October 14, 1989. They lived in Long Beach, California, for a few years then moved to Idaho City, Idaho.
They traveled a lot - Australia, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Canada, and the east coast to name a few. They did cruises, parasailing, camping, rafting, and family reunions!
Little health problems and age began to slow them down so they left the mountains and moved back to the Midwest and came to Columbus where her son lived. The daughters lived 3 hours either direction so they were centrally located to all of their family. She had some very special girlfriends.
In June of this year Marlyn was diagnosed with stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer. She underwent some radiation and chemo, but it just wasn't enough.
