John A. Cochran learned the blacksmith's trade, but farming has been his main business in life. He had a public school education, and removed to Illinois when he was twenty-five years of age. Mr. Cochran en-listed in the Union army, August 11, 1862 becoming a member of Company F 116th Reg., 111. Vol. Inf. Participating in the various events and incidents of the famous "March to the Sea," the closing battle of his military experience was at Fort McAllister.
