Presentation Anna Ruth Salzman at 250th Ruth Reunion, 18 Sept 1983:
Peter Ruth and family left Rotterdam June 24, 1733 on the Pennsylvania Merchant, a brigantine, which arrived in Philadelphia port on Sept 29 (or the 18th by our present calendar). It was not until July 21 that they 'sailed into the big ocean' losing sight of the shores of France and Spain and three days later the shores of England on their right.
On the ship's register the family is listed as R-OO-D-T as it probably sounded to the Dutch or German Captain John Stedman. Peter's name was spelled P-I-E-T-E-R. Sophia, his wife, was thirty years old at that time. The children's names were listed as Johan, Jacob, Christina, and Pieter. From baptismal records we know they were Johan Michael 7 1/2 years, Johan Jacob 6 3/4 years, Johan Christian 3 1/2 years and Johan Peter 1 1/2 years. This voyage lasted over 18 weeks.
