Elmer Schnabel, age 85, of Redfield, and formerly of Huron, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Golden Living Center at Redfield.
Elmer Schnabel was born on September 15, 1921, to Edward and Helen (Neuhardt) Schnabel at Wolsey. He attended school in the Alpena and Wessington Springs area and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1941.
He entered the United States Army in 1942 at Fort Croak, NE and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He served in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and three overseas service bars. While in Germany he was an interpreter and chauffer.
In June of 1947, Elmer married Inez Orth. They moved to Huron and he worked for Standard Oil Company. They later moved to a farm near Alpena. He sold out in 1955 and they moved to California. Later returned to Huron where he worked for the Huron School system at the Huron Arena as head maintenance man for 28 years. In October of 1973, Elmer married Maxine Remme. He retired at age 62 and at age 65 he went to work at the Huron Airport for 10 years.
Elmer was a great handyman. He could fix and build many things. He spent many hours in his beloved shop tinkering and fixing things. He also enjoyed going fishing with his cousins and friends. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, and the Sportsman Club and was always a willing volunteer.
