Sudden and unexpected came the announcement last night that John Zimbelman had committed suicide. It took the breath away from every one that heard it that was acquainted with him, for no cause could be assigned for the rash deed. The tragedy took place after five o'clock yesterday evening and it was seven before the news reached town form his residence, hence full details cannot be secured for this paper, the press being stopped to make this announcement. From what we can learn of the tragedy it was one of those unaccountable suicides that can only be attributed to a fit of temporary insanity. He had been with his family during eh afternoon and about five o'clock went into an adjoining room. A pistol report called them in, when he was found on the bed, a bullet hole through the head, breathing his last. All reports and comments point to the theory that he was despondent because of sickness, and various rumors are afloat. One statement is that he was threatened with a cancer, a small sore on his cheek that had been there for years spreading lately. Another story is that he had been troubled with asthma lately and suffered greatly. He had been to Colfax for his health and returned on a few days ago. It is thought he was told there he had an incurable disease, either cancer or asthma, and that this prompted him to take his life. Further, details we cannot get in time for this issue.
John Zimbelman, "Uncle John" as he was familiarly called by those that knew him, was one of the best known men in Boone County. He was born in Switzerland in 1817, making him 73 years old. At the age 15, in 1832, he emigrated with his parents to America, settling in Muskingum County, Ohio, where he learned the shoemaker's trade. In those early days the immense boot and shoe factories had not been established and the footwear was made by the local shoemakers. He came to Boonsboro in 1856 and established a shop there, doing a large and profitable business for ten years, employing from ten to fifteen men continuously. In 1866 about the time the shoe manufacture began to centralize in the large factories, he sold out and went into the beer brewing business. The Boonsboro brewery, under his management, was eminently successful. Eventually he turned this establishment over to his sons, who were also successful in the management until the prohibitory put an end to the business and confiscated their property.
He was always known as an honest industrious man and accumulated a competence. Just what his estate is worth we have no means of knowing, but he has always been accounted one of the rich men of the county. About ten years ago he went to Europe, visiting the land of his birth.
In 1837 he was married to Magdalena Stenger, a native of Strasburg, who survives him. There are seven children, all grown all of them living away from here, except Lafayette, his second son, now in the lumber business in Boone, and a daughter Mrs. John R. Patterson, living in Boonsboro.
The deceased was in every respect a good citizen and the tragic ending of his life is greatly deplored. A coroner's inquest was held last night, but we have not received the verdict.
The time of the funeral has not yet been fixed.
