He was a successful lawyer, but his ambitions were almost wholly political. In 1837, he was elected to Congress as a Whig. He served three terms, distinguishing himself by his eloquence, his readiness to debate, and his numerous quarrels. He became, as John Quincy Adams expressed it, "the terror of the Lucifer Party" in his Memoirs, Volume Eleven, 1876, page 19. Several times, he engaged in personal encounters on the floor of the House, and he fought a duel with S. W. Inge of Alabama. By virtue of his ability, however, he became leader of his party in the House.
After settling in California in the 1850s, Edward Stanly was appointed military governor of North Carolina in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln. On May 26, 1862, Stanly arrived in New Bern to govern the eastern section of the state under Union occupation. Confederate North Carolinians viewed Stanly as a traitor, and his treatment of blacks angered Northern abolitionists. Frustrated in his dealings with the Lincoln administration, Stanly resigned when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In 1870, he and his second wife, Cornelia, were enumerated with two domenstics in Hot Springs, Napa, California. His occupation was listed as œlawyer and his age was mistakenly listed as 56., ,, ,

œTrained as a lawyer and having no other source of income, John Stanly followed his father™s example and launched his career by a judicious marriage. his bride was Elizabeth Franck, or Frank, whom one old New Bernian described as œa country heiress without cultivation, or opportunity .. [who] inherited from her father, Martin Franck, large estates in Jones County which laid the foundations of Mr. Stanly™s prosperity.
He was a Federalist U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1801 and 1803 and again between 1809 and 1811. He was educated by private tutors before attending Princeton University. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. In 1802 John Stanly Jr. killed in a duel ex-Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, age fifty-five, over political views. Each man used a one-shot flintlock pistol. Each man reloaded and fired four times. Stanly had a bullet in his coat collar. On the fourth shot, the ex-Governor was killed. Spaight's descendants lived in the Stanly house in later years and neighbors claimed that "Ghosts" stalked through the house."
When his fatherâ„¢s estate was divided, the family home went to John, and he and his wife, Ellizabeth Frank Stanly, lived there for many years with their children.

.œWhen he was thirty, a chance visit to North Caroline introduced John Wright Stanly to Ann Cogdell, daughter of one of new Bern™s leading families, and he footloose entrepreneur decided to marry her anad settle down.
John Wright Stanly settled in New Bern, North Carolina in 1773 after failing in a business venture in Honduras. (He had been put in jail in Philadelphia in 1772 for bad debts). He prospered after settling in Craven County, and built a house in New Bern that cost $20,000. This house still stands as a public library and showplace. He was a patriot who contributed money for munitions in the Rev War. It was said that the Army would not have been victorious at Yorktown but for his financial support.
When a yellow fever epidemic swept over the town in 1789, John and Ann were among its victims. Within a month of each other, they were buried side-by-side in the cemetery of Christ Church, NC.,

James Blackshear, son of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, became the father of James Blackshear, Jr., who was killed by Tories during the Revolutionary War. He along with his cousin Martin Franck had been appointed by the governor as lieutenants of troops to be raised in defense of the Province. Shortly thereafter they were captured by Tories, and each was tied to a stake and shot to death. The Blackshear family intermarried with all of the Chinquapin Chapel families, including Franck, Huggins, Stanley, and Koonce.
John Martin Franck, a German but not from the Palatinate, came to America in 1709, on the same ship with Philip Mueller and his family, who were from the Palatinate section of Germany. Franck, then a mature scholar of 27 years of age, fell in love with Jacob Mueller's young daughter, Civilla, (sometimes listed as Sevil), she was but 17 years of age and too young for marriage, so we have a case of the old love story, "he waited for her". Among their issue was a daughter, Catherine, who married first, Hardy Bush and had issue, after the death of Bush, Catherine married James Blackshear. The location of the Franck settlement was quite near to the location of the Alexander Blackshear settlement, a few miles from New Berne, (now Newbern, N. C.) the Blackshear-Franck community was then known as "New Germany.",

Richard was perhaps the leading Whig of his community during the period just prior to the Revolutionary War. During the course of the war, he was Judge of the Admiralty Court for Port Beaufort in 1776. He was a member of the legislature from Craven Co in 1778-79 and postmaster at New Bern.
 He was a Colonel in the Revolutionary Army and led the troops which drove the last British Governor out of New Bern. It is said that he entertained George Washington when he visited New Bern.

John Cogdell, the immigrant, and his two sons, Charles and George, came to America in 1710 with Baron Christopher DeGraffenreid's party from Switzerland. The DeGraffenreid party settled New Bern, NC, named for Bern, Switzerland, birthplace of DeGraffenreid. History says this was the first important introduction into eastern NC of a most excellent class of liberty loving people. New Bern is the second oldest city in NC and was Provincial Capital for several years.
