    Merle E. Horst, 69, of 4403 Stoneridge Path, died Thursday, Aug. 12, at St. Francis.
    Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Revs. Dennis Hahle and A.L. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
    Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to *:30 p.m.
    Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
    Mr. Horst was born Oct. 17, 1923, near Doniphan to JWilliam and Emma (Hamann) Horst. He grew up on the famrm near Doniphan. He received his education at District No. 19 School in Hall County.
    He married Imogene Stelk on June 23, 1946, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple worked the family farm northesat of Doniphan for 42 years until 1988 when they retired from farming and moved to Grand Island.
    He raised crops, purebred angus cattle and also hogs. After retiring he enjoyed working with wood and restoring antique tractors.
    He was a lifetime member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and Farmers Union. He was also a member of the Giltner School. Board, Eagles Club, the Platt-Duetsche and the Saddle Club. He was a leader of Riverside Baby Beef 4-H Club for many years.
    Survivors include his wife, Imogene of Grand Island; three sons, Merle Horst of Franklin Lakes, N.J., Bernard Horst of Grand Island and Ronald Horst of Stromsburg; one daughter, Eileen M. Richter of Kearney; nine grandchildren; one brother, William Horst of Grand Island; and four sisters, Opal Steinbeck, Betty Vanosdall and Ellen Goerl, all of Grand Island, and Margie Thomssen of Lincoln.
    He was preceded in death by his parents.".

    Imogene J. Horst, 76, of Grand Island died Monday, March 24, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center.
    Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Zellmer will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
    Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, with the family to receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
    Mrs. Horst was born March 29, 1926, on a farm in rural Hall County to Arthur and Ruth (Glause) Stelk.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle E. Horst, on Aug. 12, 1993.
    Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, Merle A. and Kay Horst of Franklin Lakes, N.J., Bernie and Margene Horst of Grand Island, and Ronald D. and Rita Horst of Kearney; a daughter and son-in-law, Eileen M. and Tim Richter of Kearney; her mother, Ruth Stelk of Grand Island; two brothers, Arthur Stelk and Norman Stelk, both of Grand Island; and a sister, Madeline Welty Geldis of Omaha.

    She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Megan Horst and Adam Horst, Steve Horst and Justin Horst, Kristen Richter, Brent Richter and Stephanie Richter, Dana Horst and Wade Horst.
    She grew up on the farm and received her education at District 77 School.
    She was united in marriage to Merle E. Horst on June 23, 1946, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple resided on the family farm northeast of Doniphan for 42 years until retiring in 1988. At this time they moved to Grand Island.
    She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School class for several years. She was a 4-H Leader and served on the 4-H Council. She was a farm wife, homemaker and mother. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. In her retirement years, Imogene worked as a demonstrator at Skagway South in Grand Island.
    Memorials may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, Multiple Myeloma Cancer Fund or the American Heart Association.
    She was also preceded in death by her father; a sister, Deloris Mettenbrink; and a brother, Elton Stelk.
