It is believed that Malala "Aly" was a full-blooded Cherokee who was a sickly child, and she was given to Rev. and Mrs. Snow just prior to her parents demise on The Trail of Tears.
She married Robert Austin about 1843. They had eight children; Lydia B. Austin Johnson Hogsden, Nancy Austin, Prudence Angelina Austin Watson, Mary Austin, Margaret Austin, Squire Austin, John C. Austin and George J. Austin.
A story has been passed down that Robert, Aly and their son John, went to pray those trapped at a Princess KY clay mine collapse when a tragic 2nd collapse occurred killing all involved. Their daughter Prudence, is said to have watched the funeral procession from her bedroom after giving birth to twin daughters.

DEATH: Bartholomew Austin died around 1841 at Cumberland Gap, KY, en-route to/or from visiting relatives in KY. The source for Bartholomew's death was word of mouth conversation between E. Ray Austin, Ruth Marshall Austin, and Ann Dawson Thomas, of Amelia, VA, in the late 1980's or early 1990's. This information was passed on to Ann previously, but she doesn't remember her source. NOTE: Anna Reeves was listed as a widow in the 1850 US Census (see above), so Bartholomew obviously died before 8 Oct 1850. (source: Austin Families Association of America).

John Pleasants, I (in America, aka John the Immigrant) was actually the third in his line from England to have this name. John Pleasants, I (in America) father was John Pleasants, II (1618-death unk) and his grandfather was John Pleasants, I (1588-1640). For this record John Pleasants, I (aka the III from his line in England) will be listed as above so that the U. S. records match this one, and (hopefully) the records of his descendants with this same name.
The Pleasants family were a prominent Virginia Quaker family with lands on the Upper James River. John Pleasants (d. 1698) emigrated from England and settled in Henrico County, Virginia, around 1665. He converted to Quakerism and was an active and prominent member of the church, donating land to the church, the Curles Meeting House, and filing peitions and reports to the authorities on behalf of the Society of Friends. He married Jane (Larcome) Tucker, widow of Samuel Tucker, in 1670.

The most prominent Quaker in the county was John Pleasants, a planter of means and a respected member of the community. He allowed his house to be used as a meeting place for Quakers and was warned repeatedly. The enforcement of the anti-Quaker acts came when he and his wife were indicted for living together unlawfully according to the rules of the established church, which did not recognize their marriage under the Quaker doctrine.
He and his wife were fined 240 pounds each for illicit cohabitation and 20 pounds each for every month they failed to attend services of the parish church. Additional fines were imposed of two thousand pounds of tobacco for not having their children baptized and five hundred pounds of tobacco for allowing Quaker meetings in their house. The adoption in England of the Declaration for Liberty of Conscience and Indulgence in Religious Matters of 1687 and the Toleration Act of 1688 allowed dissenting religious groups to hold religious services openly without having to conform to the doctrines of the established church. The governor was directed to proclaim the declarations in every county, and it was to be done with the beating of drums, the firing of cannons and expresions of popular enthusiasm. The proclamation was spread on the Henrico County Minute Book in 1690. The passage of the act relieved Pleasants and his wife of the charges and nullified the fines. That same year, Pleasants set aside a parcel of land for a meetinghouse and graveyard. This meetinghouse was registered with the county court in 1692.
Smith Manuscript, Ridgeway Library, Philadelphia : Jane Pleasants, wife of John Pleasants, was zealous for the cause of Truth and had a Gift in the ministry which was very acceptable to Friends and particularly serviceable at that early time in a wilderness country, the good effect thereof was very visible in the place where she lived for a long time and where her ability of Body would not admit her to Ride alone which was for several years before her death she used to ride behind one of her servants and so continue to visit Friends and attend meetings to near the last period of her time. She survived her worthy husband by nine or ten years and then departed this life in a good old age in the year 1708, and was Buryed in Friends Burying Ground near Curles Meeting House in the presence of a numerous Assembly of Friends and neighbors.

By 1641 Virginia was well established...Many men eager for land would bring friends, relatives, servants, workers, and others to Virginia in order to qualify for the land grants...The fact that NICHOLAS PERKINS arrived in Virginia in 1641 under such circumstances does not reveal much about his background. However the entry is of interest as the first record of this PERKINS family in Virginia. it is on p. 783 of Land Patents Bk. 1 (1623- 1643) that the name of NICHOLAS PERKINS first appears. On Oct. 10, 1641, Bryant Smith was granted 100 acres in Henrico County for the transportation of two persons into the colony: NICHOLAS PERKINS and Gringall Delahaye.
Whether NICHOLAS was old or young, rich or poor, there is no way of knowing. The extant records reveal very little about him. Nevertheless, whether he had means when he arrived or whether he acquired means by thrift and industry afterwards, he was able nine years later to pay transportation costs of four persons into the colony and for this he was granted 170 acres. The patent is recorded on p. 262 of Land Patents Bk. 2 (1643-1651) and reads:
To all etc whereas etc Now Know you that I the Said Sr Wm Berkeley etc give and grant unto NICHOLAS PERKINS one hundred and Seventy Acres of Land lying in Bermuda hundred in the County of Henrico Bounded Viz:-beginning at a marked Oake in Coles his swamp and Running a Long Cunicott Path west forty Chaynes thence North west by North one hundred and twenty Chaynes thence along the Cart Path to the head of Coles Swamp and Soo along the Said Swamp to the Place where it Begun, the Said Land being due unto the said NICHOLAS PERKINS by and for the transporting of four persons etc to have and to hold etc which payment is to be made seven years after the first grant or seating thereafter etc dated the 30th of August 1650. The Mary Perkins mentioned in the patent was very likely the wife of NICHOLAS PERKINS. If so, either she was returning from a visit to England or else NICHOLAS had returned to England after his coming in 1641 because the children of NICHOLAS and Mary were born during the 1640's--but whether in England or Virginia is not known.
A hundred was a political subdivision of an English county which originally contained about a hundred families. The term was formerly used in Virginia and in Maryland and Pennsylvania and still survives in Delaware. Bermuda hundred was located where the Appomattox empties into the James. It is on the south side of the James River and not included within the present boundaries of Henrico County. When the original counties were formed in 1634 James City County included Jamestown and the site of Williams burg. Next up the river was Charles City County, and above that was Henrico County.
