Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill or to St. Mary's Catholic School in O'Neill.
Michael James Gallagher was born August 20, 1923, at the home place near Inman to John and Gean (Craig) Gallagher. He was baptized in the Catholic Church in Stafford. IN 1940, he graduated from Inman High School. Before leaving for Army Service, he spent a year working in a shipyard in California. He entered the United Stated Army in March of 1943, proudly serving his country during World War II, spending a year and a half in Europe. He received his honorable discharge in March of 1946.
On February 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Joy Moore. They lived in rural Inman before moving to O’Neill in 1973. Mick and Joy raised their two children, Tim and Jackie, on the family ranch. Mick used his skills in buying and raising cattle to build a ranch of which he had every right to be proud. Staying involved in the state’s ranching community gave him the opportunity to grow in and share his knowledge and love of the business of cattle breeding. Mick could show with pride the original Timber Culture Certificate, signed by Grover Cleveland, which was granted to his grandfather in 1893. He spent 23 years as part owner of the O’Neill Shamrock Livestock Market.
Mick loved the ranch life and remained active long after he moved off the ranch to live in O’Neill. He stayed involved for many years in an active and contributing role and continued to visit and take part even when he could no longer physically participate in the everyday activities of the life.
Mick enjoyed visiting with his friends and colleagues and was interested and caring in following the events of their lives. He was quick to show his support and interest in any way he could. You could count on him to be there in a helping way when he saw that help was needed. You could see him visiting friends at their home during their hospital stays or find him making calls to check on their welfare if they were experiencing changes in their lives.
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. His deep faith was evident to those who were close to him. He could be seen in weekly Mass and at adoration even when it may have been difficult for him to attend. His rosary was with him at all times and was used to pray for his family and friends on a regular basis. He would not miss the opportunity to say goodbye to friends at their wakes and funerals and to pray for them at this final time.
Mick is survived by his two children, Tim Gallagher and wife, Zelda, of Inman, NE, and Jackie Triplett of Grand Prairie, TX; five grandchildren, Tammy Parks and husband, J.J., Chad Newman and wife, Cory, T.J. Gallagher and wife, Sarah, Patrick Gallagher and wife, Emily, Tiffany Markwardt and husband, Mark; six great grandchildren, Tanner Newman, Emily Parks, Ashley Parks, Savannah Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Lauren Markwardt; many nieces and nephews.
