While a young man, Tom hitched a freight train west to Nebraska to be a cowboy. After some time there, he decided to attend the University of Nebraska. While he was there, he met Connie.
Although he was offered a scholarship to study landscape architecture or agriculture, Tom didn't think he wanted to do that for a living, so he returned to Chicago to study for the CPA exam.
He worked for a time as a railroad fireman, shoveling coal on a freight train, before beginning his life-long career as a landscape architect.
