    Charles Bertrand Schultz died March 7, 1995 at Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born to Charles A and Esther Peterson Schultz at Red Cloud June 17, 1908. He was a brother to the late Helen M Kent of Red Cloud. His ashes along with those of his wife Marian (Othmer) are to be interred in the Red Cloud Cemetery and marked with a boulder from their Hill Top home north of Lincoln.
    Dr Schultz attended the Red Cloud Schools graduating in 1926 after which he pursued college and graduate studies at the University of Nebraska received B SC, M SC and Ph D Degrees. His associating with the University of Nebraska spans a period of 58 years, his faculty rank dating back to 1938. He served as Director of the University of Nebraska State Museum for 35 years.
    Dr Schultz was among those to contributed to the beginning of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and remained an active member of its Board of Governors until his death. His Indian relics, collected in the thirties, were among the original displays at the first Cather Museum. In 1959, he supervised University personnel in the construction of a contour map of the western half of Webster County which depicts the topography of the locales of six Cather novels. This map hangs today in the Cather Museum.
    Dr Schultz pursued a distinguished professional career studying the changing world environment and the migrations and extinctions of animals and plants. He and wife Marian studied in over 60 different countries and published over 200 scientific articles and monographs. He is recognized internationally as an authority in the fields of Paleontology, Geology, Water Resources, Ecology and Early Man. In recognition of his global accomplishments, the Nebraska Legislature declared May 30, 1971 to be "C Bertrand Schultz Day" and the Red Cloud designated him as a "Notable Native Son."
    Throughout their lifetime the couple have generously endowed the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, enabling them to purchase a remaining untouched section of native grass prairie in Webster County for College and High School studies, to establish a research arboretum at the Hill Top home estate and to establish annual scholarships. They also funded the Red Cloud Methodist Church Endowment Foundation with a $100,000 grant.
    Dr Schultz is survived by two daughters, Tranda Fischelis, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Donna Wilcox, Papillion, Nebraska and by two granddaughter, Marnie Cummins and Amanda Wilcox.

    Funeral services for Charles A Schultz were held at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, from the Amack & son Funeral Home, with the Rev E Allen Magill officiating.
    Mr and Mrs Glen Mountford sang "Abide With Me" and Mrs Clifford H Phillips sang "Just Beyond the Sunset," Mrs N B Bush accompanist.
    The casketbearers were Blaine Hagadorn, Stanley Offner, Joseph Moler, Carl Ware, Clifford Caldwell and Harlan Guida. Honorary pallbearers were H S Foe, A L Guy, Dr J G Aukes, K L Bowen, Ralph Makinster, W B Smith and Fay Palmer.
    Interment was made in the Red Cloud cemetery.
    Charles A Schultz, son of the late Charles A and Augusta Karnatz Schultz, was born on a farm near Guide Rock, December 6, 1880 and passed on at his home at 421 North Chestnut, April 22, 1954. He was the eldest of six children.
    When he was 16 years of age the family moved to Red Cloud, at that time living where the Geo A Kailey residence now stands. He and Esther Peterson were united in marriage June 19th 1907 at Bladen and to this union two children were born, Dr C B Schultz of Lincoln and Helen, now Mrs Kenneth Kent, also of Lincoln.
    Charles Schultz had a photographic studio in Red Cloud for ten years, but in 1912 he and his family moved to a farm in Garfield Township where they resided for two years.
    Besides his devoted wife, who has been a real helpmate, he is survived by the son and daughter mentioned above; one brother, Louis Schultz of Washington, D C; four sister, Mrs E J Beauchesne of Palo Alto, California; Mrs Ed Cameron of Santa Monica, California; Mrs Rose Hitchings, Los Angeles, California and Mrs Lucena White, Roseburg, Oregon; three grandchildren of who he was very fond and in who he found much pleasure, Douglas Kent, Tranda and Donna Schultz; his devoted daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Marian Schultz and Kenneth Kent, as well as other relatives and many friends.

    Esther Lurinda Peterson Schultz, daughter of Oscar E Peterson and Anna Belle Marple Peterson was born April 26, 1888 on a farm in the Bladen Community. She attended high school in Red Cloud and the Red Cloud Business College where she earned a teacher's certificate. She taught a year at the Mill School west of Red Cloud. On June 19, 1907, she was married to Charles A Schultz of Red Cloud. Their two children are Dr C Bertrand Schultz of Lincoln and Helen (now Mrs Kenneth Kent) also of Lincoln.
    Mrs Schultz passed away Tuesday, June 12 at the age of 84 years. Mr Schultz died in 1954.
    She took great pride in her family, church and community, as is evidenced by the following.
    Member of the Methodist Church for 73 years having united with the church at Campbell, Nebr., when she was 11 years old and late uniting with the Methodist Church here in Red Cloud where she was a devoted member for 64 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher, as secretary of the Sunday School for 13 years, Financial Secretary of the church for ten years, church treasurer for 21 years. She served a a member of the Board and was an honorary life member of the Board. She also was on the Membership Committee for 56 years.
    She was a member of the Red Cloud School Board for 8 years, 6 years as Secretary. 1 year as Vice President and 1 year as President.
    She was a great help in the organization of the Red Cloud Women's Club having been the President of the Delphian Society, a forerunner to the Women's Club.
    Her hobby in later life was braiding rugs. Several of her room sized reversible rugs won prizes at the Nebraska State Fair.
    Her grandchildren were a great joy to her and she in turn was an inspiration to them. She always had much interest in the young people of the community.
    Member of the Order of Eastern Star and a 50 years member of the Fortnightly Club associated with J C Penney Store 18 years. Life Member of Willa Cather Memorial.
    Survivors ors besides her son and daughter mentioned about are 4 sisters, Mrs Grace McCallum of Campbell, Mrs Ethel Hicks of Wray, Colo., Mrs Harriet Coyle of Lincoln and Mrs Louise Herbert of Ardmore, Oklahoma, one brother, George Peterson of Lyman, Nebr., her devoted daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Marian Schultz and Kenneth Kent, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
    Grandchildren: Dr Douglas Kent, his wife Margaret and their children, Karen and David of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Mrs Tranda Schultz Cummins, her husband, Professor David Cummins and their daughter, Marnie of Swathmore, Pennsylvania, Mrs Donna Schultz Wilcox and her husband, Dr Charles Wilcox of Lincoln.
    Funeral services were held from First United Methodist Church at 10:00 o'clock Saturday morning with the Rev Frank Schroeder officiating.
    Music was furnished by Mrs Sue Ware Powell, soloist, accompanied by Mrs Betty Rasser.
    Pallbearers were Carl Ware, Bob Beardslee, Duaine Eldred, Kenneth Bowen, Clive Bogardus and Bob McCartney.
    Interment was in the Red Cloud cemetery.

    Chas Schultz, who has been ill for some time at his residence one mile north of the city, died last Sunday, April 15th.
    Mr Schultz was born in Germany, on October 7, 1859 and at the time of his death was forty-nine years, six months and eight days old. For several years past he has resided in this county, and through thrifty and careful business methods became possessed with a goodly portion of this world's goods. He leaves a wife, two sons and four daughters. The funeral services were held at the M E church Tuesday under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. lodge, and the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. - parents were John and Mary (Vick) Schultz

    Mrs Augusta Schultz, for many years a resident of this community, died Tuesday morning at 2:15, at the home of her son and wife, Mr and Mrs L H Schultz at York, where she had been since late October. Mrs Schultz had been in frail health for several years, but her courage and indomitable spirit enabled her to keep the same cheerful outlook on life.
    Funeral services are to be conducted Thursday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock from the Turner Funeral Home, by Rev Arthur Swanson. Interment will be make in the city cemetery.
    Augusta, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Karnatz, was born in Bremen, near Hamberg, Germany, February 13, 1859 and was aged 81 years, 3 months and 10 days at the time of her death. When about 10 years of age she came with her parents to America and after living in Chicago, Illinois for some time, came westward and made this community her home. She was married to Chas. Schultz on July 1, 1878. He husband died in 1900. She is survived by two sons, C A Schultz of this city; L H Schultz of York; four daughter, Mrs E J Cameron, Mrs Rose Hitching and Mrs Lucena Drain of California and Mrs Ada Beauschesne who resides in Omaha one brother, John Karnatz of Burr Oak, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs Lizzie Schultz of Guide Rock and Mrs Fred Karnatz of Burr Oak as well as other relatives and many friends.

    Frederick Karnatz died Wednesday, December 2, 1914 at the home of his son John, 6 miles north of Burr Oak as a result of apoplexy.
    The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the Burr Oak M E Church, Rev A E Bashford, Evangelical pastor at Fair View officiating., assisted by Rev J Scherbacher of Hastings, Neb. and burial was made in Burr Oak Cemetery.
    Frederick Karnatz was born October 25, 1831, near Grimmen Pommerena Germany and was married Fredareka Schult in 1855. To this union were born seven children, two of who died in infancy. They came to Cook County, Illinois in the spring of 1871 and from there to Jewell County, Kansas in 1874 where he remained till the time of his death.
    He has made his home with John for the past 29 years.
    He leaves a brother and sister, one son and four daughters, 23 grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. His wife had preceded him to the better work six years ago. He was converted in the year 1875 and joined the German Methodist Church and later united with the Evangelical church on the Burr Oak Mission, where he remained a faithful member till he was called to his eternal reward.

    Frederica Mary Schult was born May 16, 1832, at Pommery, Germany, and died at the home of her son, John F Karnatz, in Walnut Township, Jewell County, Kansas, September 11, 1908, aged 76 years, 3 mo. and 25 days,
    She was married to Fred Karnatz. To this union seven children were born, two of whom went to the spirit world in infancy. She is survived by her husband and five children - one son and four daughters. They are John F Karnatz of Burr Oak; Mrs Lizzie Schultz of Guide Rock; Mrs Augusta Schultz of Red Cloud; Mrs Mary Karnatz of Edgar, Nebr. and Mrs E. E. Rath of St Francis, Kansas, all of whom except the last mentioned were with her when she passed away. She had suffered for several months with cancer of the stomach and it has been known for a long time that it was only a question of time until the end,.
    With her husband and family she came to the U S in 1871 settling first at Thornton, Cook County, Illinois, coming from there to Jewell County, Kansas. For a time they lived in Cheyenne County but returned several years ago. For the past twenty years, with her husband she has made her home with their son, John. She was converted in 1876 and joined the German M E Church remaining a member of that organizations until eight years ago, when she transferred her membership to the Evangelical Association and continued a member of that church to the time of her death.
    The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the M E Church of this place and was conducted by Rev McCoy assisted by Rev VanGunday and the body was laid away in the Burr Oak Cemetery.
